1 Hr Fire Rated Wall

Elements of buildings the fire resistance rating classifies the ability of an assembly to confine and isolate fire within a zone comprised of fire resistance rated walls ceiling and floor assemblies.

Where to install type x drywall. This intertek listed assembly is commonly used in 1 hour exterior walls along the property line including single family construction. 2009 irc requires walls built within 5 of a property line or within 5 of another building on the same property to have a 1 hour fire resistance rating with fire exposure from the exterior of the building note. These wall assembly files are used for planning and estimation purposes for many ul wall types such as fire rated wall assemblies.

According to the book commercial drafting and detailing a typical one hour fire rated wall consists of 2x4 studs spaced 16 inches from the center of one stud to the center of the next covered by 5 8 inch type x gypsum board. Wall board assemblies consist of wood steel or concrete block framing insulation and gypsum wall board. Using different combinations of board and insulation various system options are available with fire resistances of 30 60 90 or 120 minutes. One hour fire rated wall boards include sheetrock brand ultralight firecodex gypsum panels durock brand cement board next gen and sheetrock brand firecode core type x.

Code requirements vary an addendum to the assembly allows for the use of common claddings including smartside fiber cement and t1 11 panels. Type x gypsum board is wallboard to which non combustible fibers have been added. For this reason a fire rated drywall is sometimes called one hour fire wallboard. Descriptions of successfully tested lumber wall assemblies are provided in table 1 for one hour rated wall assemblies and table 2 for two hour rated wall assemblies.

This assembly is fire rated for 1 hour from both sides. Gyproc 12 5mm wallboard fixed either side of minimum 63mm x 38mm timber studs at 600mm centres creates a 30 minute fire rated partition to bs476. Please refer to white book c04 s11 p02 for more. If a conventional 1 2 inch thick sheet of drywall will stand up to 30 minutes of fire then the added 1 8 inch found in the type x drywall along with its other properties will double your margin of safety to 60 minutes.

The ratings relate to fire tests designed to determine how quickly fire can raise the temperature to unacceptable levels.
